1998
THE SEED IS PLANTED …
We would be remiss if we didn’t tell our full origin story. Liberty Life started the Learning Channel in a slot on the SABC in the early 90’s. When Liberty wanted to increase this slot into a full time channel in early 2002 what is now Mindset Network came into being.
2001

Many of the current Mindset team worked on this – the OG edtech – website for South Africa. Originally part of the Learning Channel it was integrated into Mindsets Ecosystem in 2018.
The site won a Loerie in 2002.
2003
Mindset Network
In 2003 Mindset Network was launched as a not-for-profit company at gala hosted by Madiba. Our first educational offering was a channel on DsTV called “Activate”. This was formally re-named Mindset Learn in 2024 – and the rest is history…
2005
Mindset health channel
The Mindset Health channel aired from 2005 until 2018. Connecting with health professionals and local communities in clinic waiting-rooms – the service was a touch point to deliver crucial health information during South Africa HIV crisis. This was a partnership with the Dept of Health and USAID/PEPFAR.
2007
first live broadcasts
2007 saw the start of Live Maths shows – allowing learners to call in and get help with questions and exam preparation. The hour long show called “Maths 911” – aptly named after the emergency line was eventually stretched into what is now the “Prime Time” slot occupied by Tenfold Live.
2008
PUBLISHING
Following the success of the Maths 911 Live-TV shows, an innovative textbook was published and distributed with the Independent Newspaper Group. This began a series of titles to support many of Mindset and it’s partners broadcast lessons.
2014
BIG SCHOOL
Early Childhood Development is housed in our “Big School” initiative – which launched in 2014. The programming block covers literacy and numeracy – available for English and isiXhosa native tongue speakers.
2015
UKUSIZA
Ukusiza – meaning “to help” in Zulu – is the name of our teacher professional development series, funded by USAID, it covered mentorship for the foundation and intermediate phases of education – for both the literacy and mathematics curricula. This project was extended by the Department of Education in 2018.
2018
TENFOLD
Early Childhood Development is housed in our “Big School” initiative – which launched in 2014. The programming block covers literacy and numeracy – available for English and isiXhosa native tongue speakers.
2020
POP PRIMARY
In April of 2020 in response to the Covid 19 pandemic Mindset in partnership with DsTV we launched a pop-up channel for primary school. This new service added Grades 1-7 on a channel #317. The channel was retired a the end of the pandemic and the resources now are a staple on the regular channel.
2022
YOUTUBE
At the end of 2022 the Mindset Learn Youtube channel achieves a milestone – notching over 4 million hours served – and over 36 million channel views. Youtube as of 2025 has the widest reach and watch-time of all of Mindset’s platforms.

Mindset Network was founded on the principle that technology could be used to cost-effectively deliver the best teachers and content to every learner. Our founding payline was “empowerment through education,” and we truly believe that. At the core of our work is the pursuit of equality. We believe in providing free and broad access across the widest possible range of grades and subjects.
Our interventions serve a wide range of needs, from Grade R through to Grade 12. This ecosystem includes targeted professional development for teachers and guided support for learners. By working with various like-minded stakeholders and government partners, we delicately navigate complex partnerships to foster innovation and critical thinking. These collaborations are essential to our mission of delivering the next generation of African talent. Our impact, milestones, and extensive content archive are the result of generous donations and longstanding partnerships.
